Finch Statement on ‘State of the State”

Assemblyman Gary D. Finch (R,C-Springport) today expressed optimism in lieu of Governor Spitzer’s pledge to address property taxes, but remained cautious over the merits of his proposal.  The assemblyman also vowed to ensure the governor remains committed to his plan to revitalize the upstate economy.

“High property taxes have eroded our competitive business edge, forced seniors out of their homes and young adults to seek residence in surrounding states,” said Finch.  “We don’t need a commission to tell us the damage high property taxes have on our distressed economy.  While I am pleased that the governor has acknowledged the need to cap property taxes, actions speak louder than words.  Governor Spitzer has pledged to address the crisis head on, and I will fight to ensure the governor keeps that promise.”

The governor announced the creation of a bi-partisan commission, led by Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi, to study the impacts of unfunded mandates on school districts and municipalities, identify ways to limit school spending and maintain quality education, and propose a property tax cap.  The governor also announced the creation of an Upstate Revitalization Fund to invest $1 billion in local businesses, infrastructure, and agri-business to attract and retain meaningful jobs.

Assemblyman Finch was pleased that Governor Spitzer guaranteed returning Afghanistan and Iraq combat veterans a benefit that will cover the full cost of tuition at any SUNY or CUNY college or university.

“These courageous young men and women have risked their lives for their country, and it is our responsibility to ease their transition once they return home,” said Finch. “Providing our veterans a quality education demonstrates the breadth of our gratitude.”
