Finch Cautiously Optimistic Following Governor’s ‘State of Upstate’ Address
Assemblyman Gary D. Finch (R,C-Springport) today expressed optimism following the governor’s ‘State of Upstate’ address, but remained concerned that the plan lacks a solution to the long-term problem that hinders economic growth - property taxes.
“For too long, the upstate economy has lagged behind the rest of the state, as overburdened residents have watched businesses flock to surrounding states with more business- friendly environments,” said Finch. “Today the governor unveiled his plan to jumpstart our struggling economy with targeted investments to our most distressed areas. While I am pleased that Governor Spitzer shares our vision for a brighter future and remain certain that his bold investments will provide relief, I am concerned that increased government spending only exacerbates the problem over the long term - especially in light of a $4.5 billion budget deficit. Rising property taxes remain the largest obstacle to economic growth - decreasing private investment, driving up business costs and eliminating jobs. We need a two-pronged approach that combines targeted investment with fundamental reform to our property tax system. That is why I call on the governor to support our legislation to cap property taxes. By reducing government spending and capping property taxes, we can build an economic environment that can attract and retain businesses and jobs. Without a pro-active focus to lower our tax burden, we can be sure that the governor’s plan will remain only a temporary solution.”
