STATEMENT FROM ASSEMBLYMAN FINCH ON EXECUTIVE BUDGET

I was pleased to hear Governor Spitzer’s Executive Budget address accountability in the educational system in our state. Most particularly, he identified abysmal graduation rates in the low 40 percent range to the best performances only in the 80 percent range, all of which are unacceptable. With the proposed increases in funding to education, we all know that accountability is a priority. It is the responsibility of the entire educational system to demand and require excellence. I have been advocating for this and raising awareness of the problems that exist in the educational system since my first election. I am optimistic that this measure will remain an important part of the governor’s agenda.

In addition, I am also eager to work with the governor to ensure that New York’s middle class receive real property tax relief so that our young families and senior citizens are not forced out of New York state. I do not think the governor’s proposal in reference to tax relief goes far enough for all New Yorkers. His proposal falls short of encouraging small businesses to grow and stay here in New York state, which is essential to revitalizing the upstate economy.
