Statement by Assemblyman Gary Finch (R,C,I - Springport)
"When the Governor's
budget was released it became evident that serious work needed to be
done in order to reduce the immense debt facing New York state.
However, when negotiations are held without representation from members
of both sides of the aisle, parts of the state are inevitably going to
be unfairly slighted."
"Creating jobs and focusing on stimulating the economy
by making long-term investments in infrastructure and business should be
our top priorities. Instead, we have a proposal on the table that cuts
funding for farmers and New York's wine industry, both vital to the
economy of the Southern Tier. Also, the Governor plans to take almost
ninety percent of the money brought in by SUNY tuition increases and
sweep it into the general fund. Students were forced to pay additional
tuition under the guise of the
extra money going to improving their education. In addition, families
would see the cost of health care rise through a 'Covered Lives
Assessment'- a health tax."
"We really need to examine New York's budget and work
to find an equitable solution to the looming budget crisis. This can
only be done with bi-partisan cooperation, which is something we have
yet to see."
