FINCH ANNOUNCES SUNY MARITIME  COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP NOMINATIONS

One qualified applicant from his district will be chosen

Assemblyman Gary Finch (R,C-Springport) today announced the availability of a full scholarship for one of his district’s residents to attend The State University of New York (SUNY) Maritime College.  Located in New York City, SUNY Maritime College offers full, four-year tuition scholarships to one qualified applicant nominated by each member of the state Legislature.

“This program offers qualified students the opportunity to study at one of the nation’s premier maritime colleges,” said Finch.  “I strongly encourage high school seniors throughout my district to consider this great opportunity and submit an application.  I look forward to nominating an outstanding student to attend this prestigious college.”

While pursing an undergraduate degree in engineering, business or science, cadets also prepare for licensure as ship officers (3rd Mate or 3rd Assistant Engineer) in the U.S. Merchant Marine.  The College’s curriculum blends classroom instruction with three summers of international travel aboard the training vessel Empire State V1.  Students are exposed to world cultures while polishing their skills at the helm of this 565-foot ship.

Applicants must submit a Maritime College and Cadet Appointment Program application to the college by March 15.  Nominees should meet a number of specific qualifications, including:

  • A minimum 1200 SAT score and 90 grade point average, though students scoring below those levels may still apply.
  • Be a first-time college student and New York state resident for at least one year prior to January 15 of the year of anticipated entrance to Maritime College.
  • Be a U.S. citizen.
  • Demonstrate leadership skills through extracurricular activities, as well as school and community involvement.

For more information about the Cadet Appointment Program, contact Assemblyman Finch’s office at (315) 255-3045 or the SUNY Maritime College Office of Admissions at (718) 409-7221, or visit www.sunymaritime.edu
