ASSEMBLYMAN FINCH ANNOUNCES CORRECTIONS OFFICER EXAM

Assemblyman Gary Finch (R,C,I - Springport) has joined with the New York State Department of Correctional Services in announcing a new corrections officer examination on April 4, 2009.  Applications are due by February 17, 2009.

"I encourage interested individuals in pursuing a new career to look into becoming a corrections officer," said Finch.  "It pays well, provides excellent benefits and is a great opportunity.  Being a corrections officer is challenging, but it provides an essential service in ensuring that New York's criminal justice system runs effectively."

Starting annual salary for a corrections officer trainee is $34,329.  After completion of the eight-week training program, each trainee receives a $200 bonus.  After six months, a trainee's salary increases to $36,111.

Upon the completion of a full one-year probationary period, each officer will earn 16 college credits and a pay increase to $41,348 annually. In addition, appointees will receive health insurance, retirement benefits and pre-shift briefing, which amount to $1,727 per year.

Candidates must be U.S. citizens at least 21 years of age and New York state residents with either a high school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED).  Applicants must be in good physical and mental health and will be required to take a comprehensive written exam.  A background, medical, physical and psychological check will follow prior to appointment to the training academy.

Interested candidates may obtain an application through Assemblyman Finch's district office by calling (315) 255-3045.  Applications are also available online at www.docs.state.ny.us and at all state Department of Labor offices and New York state correctional facilities.

Completed applications must include a $30 check payable to the NYS Department of Civil Service and be postmarked by February 17.
