May 10th is Mother's Day, and with the holiday fast
approaching,
Assemblyman Gary D. Finch (R,I,C - Springport) would like to encourage
women
in New York to utilize the services provided by the Adelphi New York
Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline and Support Program.
"We all have a responsibility to remind the women in our
lives
of the importance of getting a mammogram," said Finch. "With Mother's
Day
coming up, it's a perfect time to remind your loved ones."
Women 40 and over are recommended to get a mammogram every
one
to two years. Those with a family history of breast cancer should start
getting mammograms at an earlier age and should have them performed more
often.
Adelphi's free hotline has been in existence for almost 30
years
and provides many vital services including, helping women find
accredited
mammography facilities and offering emotional support from trained
volunteers, most of whom are breast cancer survivors. For information
or to
contact the hotline, call (800) 877-8077 or visit
www.adelphi.edu/nysbreastcancer.
"Early detection is key to preventing long-term damage, and
having an annual mammogram is the best way to be proactive," Finch
stated.
"While it may seem scary to some, most mammograms turn out perfectly
healthy
results, and they are vital to the health of all women."
