FINCH STANDS UP FOR NEW YORK'S SECOND AMENDMENT RIGHTS

Assemblyman Gary D. Finch (R,C,I - Springport) today voted against a package of bills that would infringe on the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding gun owners and dealers in New York.

Finch, who has repeatedly received an "A" grade from the NRA based on his voting records and stance on issues, said, "I take my
responsibility to protect the rights and welfare of New Yorkers very seriously.  Hunting is a favorite pastime of many people in my district and I am loathe to think that we could see their ability to hunt taken away because of reckless, careless criminals.  Those that illegally use firearms must be punished to the fullest extent of the law.  That should be the focus of debate, not taking away sacred constitutional rights."

The following are a few of the most detrimental bills voted against by Finch:

(A.6468) Requires any Semi Automatic Pistol Manufactured or Delivered to Any Licensed Dealer in New York to be Capable of Micro stamping Ammunition. Finch voted against this legislation because it is not economically viable and has little potential to solve gun crimes. When California enacted similar legislation, gun manufacturers stopped shipping and selling firearms in that state.

(A.3211-A), Bans the Sale, Possession, or use of 50 or Larger Caliber Weapons. Finch voted against this bill because the legislation would infringe on New Yorkers' Second Amendment rights and would hurt sportsman groups, while doing little to make the state safer since few crimes are committed with 50 caliber weapons.

(A.6157) Creates a New Definition of an "Assault Weapon" and Requires Registration of Existing "Assault Weapons" with the Ballistic Gun Databank. Finch voted against this bill because it duplicates existing law, and would ban many hunting rifles and shotguns that are currently in use by sportsman and for home defense.

"The people of Central New York take their Second Amendment rights very seriously," said Finch.  "Law-abiding citizens who are trained in the proper use of a firearm must be able to defend their families against criminals.  I am here to do all that I can to prevent their rights from being trampled upon."
