LEGISLATIVE COLUMN FOR THE WEEK OF MAY 5, 2006

FROM THE DESK OF ASSEMBLYMAN FINCH

WITH MOTHER’S DAY JUST AROUND THE CORNER, REMIND YOUR LOVED ONES TO
RECEIVE MAMMOGRAPHY SCREENINGS

Mother’s day is just one week away and while we should all take the time to thank the mothers in our families, we must also remind our loved ones to have regular mammography screenings. The Adelphi New York Statewide
Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program has already kicked off their Mother’s Day Mammography Campaign and they have asked me to help in getting the message out to my constituents of the importance of women
being screened regularly for breast cancer.

As a husband and father, I know the importance that a mother has in the lives of her loved ones. Sadly, breast cancer remains a killer among middle-aged women and there is no greater protection than early detection. There are many services available to women such as this campaign and I recommend that all women use the resources that are available.

The Adelphi New York Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program services almost 500,000 people each year through their hotline, website, counseling services, educational programs, and outreach projects. I encourage women and their families to use programs such as these for their incredible benefits and services.

Our mothers and loved ones are the foundation of our families. It is important that we remind them of the importance of having a regular mammogram screening. For women, there is no greater defense than early
detection of breast cancer. While we show the love we have for the women in our lives on Mother’s Day, I encourage us all to remind these incredible women to be sure they have regular mammograms done. Sadly,
breast cancer affects the lives of hundreds of thousands of people in New York. Do not wait when it comes to this issue. The Adelphi New York Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program’s motto is: “When you
take care of yourself, you’re taking care of your family.” Our families need the foundation that our women provide, it is imperative for the structure of our lives and our families.

For more information and to locate an accredited mammography facility, call the Adelphi New York Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program at 800-877-8077. Those who call with limited income can also find out about low cost and free mammograms through the hotline.

The hotline has been in existence for 25 years. It is a project of the Adelphi University School of Social Work on Long Island and is funded by the New York State Legislature, Department of Health, grants and contributions.
