FINCH APPLAUDS
AGREEMENT ON GASOLINE SALES TAX CAP
Assemblyman Gary D. Finch (R,C-Springport) today applauded last night’s
agreement between state lawmakers to cap the state sales tax on gasoline,
saving motorists four cents per gallon. The agreement awaits the
governor’s approval, who has yet to publicly state his support.
“I have been advocating for the elimination of a
portion of the state sales tax to help motorists in Central New York deal
with the heavy burden of rising fuel costs,” said Finch. “I am hopeful
Governor Pataki will throw his support behind the measure for the
motorists of New York.”
Assembly Republicans proposed a floor amendment last
month that would provide a similar cap on the state sales tax, but the
amendment was narrowly defeated 77-64, with all 77 no votes coming from
Assembly
Democrats.
The new agreement caps gasoline taxes at eight cents
per gallon, equal to what the state collects on $2 per gallon. Finch added
that local taxes on gasoline still range from 12 to 15 cents per gallon
across the state.
“New York, as a state, is limited in its ability to
provide substantial, permanent relief being as it is a federal issue,”
said Finch. “I am proud, however, to be a part of this agreement that will
provide relief for those struggling to balance the expense of food, gas
and housing. I commend Leader Tedisco and my colleagues who were steadfast
in their resolve to create relief for New York’s taxpayers yet again.”
The bill, to be voted on next week, is estimated to
cost the state $200 million. Counties have the option to cap the local
share of the sales tax on gasoline, further reducing the cost per gallon.
If passed, the cap would take effect June 1st .
