Finch Votes No on Marijuana Legislation Bill pushed by Assembly Democrats flawed, opens doors to gateway of drug problems
Assemblyman Gary D. Finch (R,C –Springport) condemned a late night vote in the Assembly that would legalize the possession, manufacture and administration of marijuana by certified patients or designated caregivers for medical use.
“I voted against legalizing marijuana because I feel this legislation would set a precedent for legalizing harder drugs in the near future,” said Finch. “We tell our children to say no to smoking but here we are, leaders of our state, condoning drug use. It’s the wrong message to send – contradicts what we have said in the past – and I do not support its passage.”
Finch also noted that the legislation, Assembly Bill No. 4867A, is flawed. “As a legislator, I cannot support something that is as disconnected as this bill. There are outstanding issues with the legislation, in that it does not have measures providing for the sale of marijuana. This poses issues for a chronically ill person receiving marijuana from someone on the street. It would allow them to have it in their possession, but the person selling it to them is not supposed to be doing so and can get in trouble for their actions. The bill is silent on this matter, causing a major problem for ill patients, and ultimately shows a major disconnect between legislative intent and reality; which makes for poor legislation.”
